Dedicated to making the school a more beautiful place, one of Grossmont's newest clubs is already making a difference.
Grossmont is known for many things: academics, sports, and its rich history. One thing that students who have been at the school for a while may not think about is that Grossmont is also known for the campus itself. Yet in recent years, the campus has begun to fall into a bit of disarray, with trash, dead plants, and empty landscapes becoming more and more common.
Enter Grossmont Beautification Club! Founded this year and sponsored by the school, Beautification Club is taking care of all of the areas of the school that could use some beautification. The club is run primarily by Kailey Wilkens, Siena Quinn, and Mr. Bradley (Club President, Vice President, and Advisor, respectively), and even though they are a fairly new club, their first project is already complete!
You may have noticed on your way into campus from the front entrance that there are new plants and groundcover on the large embankment along the side of the main road. That is because the members of Beautification Club spent the morning of Sunday the 14th planting and laying down mulch for the school.
The school provided all of the plants, and the students provided the tools and labor. The plants the school provided were chosen for their hardiness and versatility - their ability to survive without a huge amount of water.
Completing the first project has left everyone with more enthusiasm than ever.
"I'm most excited to see certain parts of the campus improve, and I like the fact that students are willing to do this on their own. I'll probably be here for the next 20 years, hopefully, so it's going to be nice to see everything grow in." - Mr. Bradley
With their first project finished, the club is looking for their next project. Ideas that have been thrown around include the planter box by the tennis courts, the concrete slope along the history building, the beds in the lower quad, and the tree by the blue stage. They are also considering creating murals around campus.
The club is always open to new members interested in helping to straighten out the campus.
"There's volunteer hours, and there will probably be a party at the end of the year for everybody that volunteers. And even if you can't show up to the meetings, you can still volunteer." - Kailey Wilkens
Above all, Kailey insists that everyone in the club is very friendly, and appreciates all the work everyone has put in already.
If you are interested in being a part of Grossmont Beautification Club, they meet every Wednesday during lunch in Mr. Bradley's room (845).
