The Newspaper Makes a Comeback

Updated: Dec 8, 2018

After 3 years of absence, the newspaper is finally back, and better than ever.

In 1927 Grossmont began a huge tradition: the school newspaper.

Humble Beginnings

Having an outlet to advertise events, discuss issues which affect the world around us, and express the inner workings of our school is integral in order to foster unity and feelings of community at Grossmont. The school newspaper, Foothill Echos, was established in February of 1927 to provide such a channel. The first edition consisted of eight pages and was sold to students for a mere five cents.

Throughout the decades, the content of the paper has stayed consistent. The various volumes included articles dealing with topics such as sports, class activities, fashion, pop culture, and global issues. The newspaper emphasizes the fact that regardless of advancement in technology, the fundamental elements of the life of the American high schooler has remained virtually unchanged. Although, an observant reader might realize that each newspaper staff allowed their distinct personalities to shine through by altering the Foothill Echos heading every year. The differing headings depict the popular styles of their decade, and also reflects the unique creative minds who have left their mark on Grossmont.

Changing with the Times

Arthur Salzberg Jr. once stated, “Newspapers cannot be defined by the second word- paper. They’ve got to be defined by the first word- news.” This statement was held true when Foothill Echos went completely digital in 2012 under advisor Mrs. Stellin. This decision was made to meet the wants and needs of the modern student. Unfortunately, Foothill Echos disappeared from the Grossmont campus.

This year, Foothill Echos will be making a return to the screens of all Foothillers. The newspaper is run entirely by students under the guidance of editor-in-chief, Alexander Oleksyn in conjunction with the photography club. Foothill Echos can be accessed at https://332864.wixsite.com/foothillerechos. The new edition is made in the hopes that the school newspaper will once again become an indispensable element of what it means to be a Foothiller.
